Geography as a Discipline

NCERT Class 11 Geography — Fundamentals of Physical Geography, Chapter 1

Geography is the subject which holds the key to our future. — Michael Palin

1.1 What Is Geography?

Geography is the study of the earth as the home of humankind. It examines the spatial distribution of physical and human phenomena, and the interrelationships between people and their environment.

The word comes from Greek ge (earth) and graphein (to write or describe).

1.2 Branches of Geography

BranchFocus
Physical GeographyLandforms, climate, soils, water, vegetation
Human GeographyPopulation, settlements, economy, culture
BiogeographyDistribution of living organisms
GeomorphologyOrigin and evolution of landforms
ClimatologyAtmospheric processes and weather
OceanographyOceans and marine systems

Geography is both integrative (connecting natural and social sciences) and spatial (asking where and why there).

1.3 Approaches and Tools

Geographers use:

  • Field observation and surveys
  • Maps, GIS, and remote sensing
  • Statistical analysis of spatial data
  • Models to explain patterns (e.g. climate zones, urban growth)

The ecological approach studies humans as part of ecosystems. The regional approach divides the world into areas with distinct characteristics. The systematic approach studies one theme (e.g. rivers) across the globe.

1.4 Geography and Daily Life

Geography helps explain:

  • Why the monsoon shapes Indian agriculture
  • How coastal location affects trade and fishing
  • Why earthquakes concentrate along plate boundaries
  • How urban sprawl in Delhi-NCR alters land use

It informs planning for disaster management, transport, conservation, and sustainable development.

Chapter Summary

  • Geography studies spatial patterns and human–environment relationships
  • Branches include physical, human, geomorphology, climatology, and oceanography
  • Tools: maps, GIS, remote sensing, field work, and statistics
  • Integrates natural and social sciences; essential for planning and policy
  • Central question: What is where, why there, and why care?

Exercises (NCERT)

  • Exercise 1 — defining geography; distinguishing it from history and geology
  • Exercise 2 — branches of geography and their scope
  • Exercise 3 — examples of geographic thinking in everyday Indian life
