2.1 Origin of the Universe
The Big Bang theory proposes that the universe began ~13.8 billion years ago from an extremely hot, dense state and has been expanding ever since. Galaxies, stars, and planetary systems formed from cooling gas and dust.
Nebular hypothesis (Kant–Laplace): the solar system formed from a rotating cloud of gas and dust (solar nebula). The sun condensed at the centre; planets accreted from leftover material.
2.2 Formation of the Earth
Stages in earth's evolution:
- Differentiation — heavier elements (iron, nickel) sank to form the core; lighter silicates formed the mantle and crust
- Degassing — volcanic eruptions released water vapour, CO₂, nitrogen, and other gases, building the early atmosphere
- Cooling and condensation — water vapour condensed to form oceans (~4 billion years ago)
- Origin of life — simple organisms appeared in oceans; photosynthesis later added oxygen to the atmosphere
2.3 Geological Time Scale
Earth is ~4.6 billion years old. Major eras:

2.4 Evolution of Atmosphere and Hydrosphere
The primitive atmosphere was reducing (rich in CO₂, methane, ammonia). Photosynthetic bacteria and later plants released oxygen, enabling aerobic life.
The hydrosphere developed as the planet cooled. Rivers, lakes, and oceans became the medium for life and later shaped landscapes through erosion and deposition.
